An orangery is a brick-built extension to your home, with large, glazed areas between the windows, doors and roof structure, opting for an orangery will create a light and area space.

When considering extending living space the decision is often whether you are looking for a Conservatory, Orangery or extension.  In the past the Orangery was deemed a choice only for large country homes and estates, but they are now a popular choice for many residential homes.  Often creating some much needed additional living space such as dining rooms, kitchens, lounge areas or play rooms.

Should I build an orangery?

An orangery is predominantly brick built with large panes of glass and is closer to an extension, whereas a conservatory is made mainly of glass, with a brick built base and uPVC frames.

Do I need planning permission to add an orangery?

As a rule, adding an orangery to your home doesn’t require planning permission, however it is always important to check with your local authority to be sure.

An orangery is considered a ‘permitted development’ providing that they adhere with the guideline that:

  • The Orangery is NOT allowed to cover more than 50% of the house, be taller than 4 metres, be more than half the width of the house, have elevated platforms / balconies and have eaves taller than three metres (if it is withing 2m of a boundary)

Is an orangery cheaper than a conservatory?

Adding a conservatory to your home is generally cheaper than adding an orangery – this is because there is more design work, building, brick laying and ensuring that it matches aesthetically to your home. Adding an orangery can increase the value of your home.

Does an orangery need to have foundations?

The short answer is yes. As with all buildings and extensions a solid foundation is essential. Foundations provide stability and strength to the building and the knowledge that it is stable against any inclement weather and strong enough to bear heavy loads. Solid foundations are the most important part of any building, and the Orangery is no exception.

Will an orangery add value to my home?

A well designed and built Orangery can add to the overall value of your home.  The additional space, light and style will also add to the appeal if you come to sell your home.

When looking at making improvements and extending your home an Orangery is a great option. A key factor is adding that additional space you are looking for and that it can be used all year round, which is sometimes not the case with conservatories that are not tiled roofed.  An Orangery is a solid investment in your home whilst creating that beautiful space you need for your family and lifestyle.
