When buying new windows, there’s a lot to think about. And one of the first decisions you need to make is probably what material you’d like your windows to be made from. Your choice of material will impact what style of window you choose, and there’s a lot of options to navigate: PVC, uPVC, aluminium, wooden.
But before you can make the decision, you may be asking yourself – PVC or uPVC? What’s the difference?
The difference in name is simple, but it will have a huge impact on your home. So, here’s what you need to know:
What do PVC and uPVC stand for?
PVC stands for Polyvinyl Chloride, and UPVC stands for Uplasticised Polyvinyl Chloride. The “unplasticized” part means that they’re made from a different plastic.
But why is that important?
PVC
PVC is made from a synthesised plastic which contains very little crude oil. This makes PVC windows fire resistant, durable, and sturdy.
However, there are some negatives of PVC that you must be aware of. Most critically, PVC contains harmful chemicals that can impact your health and the environment.
PVC also behaves differently according to the temperature. For example:
Moderate Heat
When the temperature hits 25-60 degrees Celsius, PVC becomes more flexible. It will keep its structure, but the longer its left in these temperatures, it will become increasingly bendy.
Extreme Heat
When PVC hits 100+ degrees Celsius, PVC starts to decompose – which is when it releases the gas. This process is called dechlorination – releasing hydrogen chloride gas. At this temperature, PVC will lose its structure, discolour, and toxic fumes will be released.
We don’t recommend installing PVC windows because of its dangerous components. Instead, you may choose to install uPVC…
uPVC
The main benefit of uPVC is that it doesn’t contain the harmful plastics that PVC does. Instead, it’s an eco-friendly alternative, that is durable, low-maintenance, and secure.
Not only is uPVC non-toxic, but the frames are actually recyclable as well! This means that in future, your uPVC frames can be remade into new frames – a much cleaner process for the environment. In fact, uPVC is considered one of the cleanest materials used in windows and doors today.
uPVC in heat
uPVC is considered one of the best performing materials in heat. It can expand when subject to extreme temperatures, but it will return to its normal state when the temperatures return to normal. No need for you to worry with uPVC.
