We love the hot sunshine, but sometimes it gets too much, and we just want to enjoy our cool home. But then we go inside, and realise our home is just as hot as outside?
How do we keep our homes cool when its scorching outside? You start with the windows.
Here are our top tips to stop heat coming through your windows this summer…
1.Keep curtains, blinds, and windows closed
We have to start off with the known and loved – keep your blinds and curtains closed. We know it sounds silly, but it really does make a huge difference!
Blackout blinds are particularly good for keeping heat out – as they are actually made to reflect the sunlight, keeping your home nice and cool.
For the best results, keep everything shut during the hottest parts of the day (midday-afternoon). Everyone jumps to draw the curtains, and get the windows open to let in that lovely light and expel heat when the sun’s out, but you’re actually heating your home. To keep cool, keep everything closed.
2.Consider heat-reflective films
Did you know that you can buy heat-reflective window films? These films easily cling to your windows, reflecting heat from the sun, and blocking harmful UV rays.
This option is great if you have older windows, but aren’t ready to replace them. It’s a temporary fix, but a good one. They’re available on Amazon, and in other retailers.
3.Bubble Wrap
Not the best looking solution, but bubble wrap is a great temporary window insulator. Simply spray your windows with water, and attach a sheet of bubble wrap.
This will trap the heat, keeping your house nice and cool.
4.Check for gaps and draughts
As it starts to get warmer, you should consider checking your windows for gaps and draughts. Not only is this good practice for maintaining your windows’ lifespan, but it’s also a key tactic for keeping heat out of your home.
Draughts and gaps don’t just let in the light, they let in hot air too. So check for gaps, and if you find any, seal them.
5.Invest in new windows
You may find that these temporary solutions just aren’t cutting it. And that could be because your windows are in need of an upgrade. Single glazed windows are not efficient for keeping heat out of your home, and this could be causing you discomfort. Consider installing double or triple glazing to your windows, or for the best results – invest in some new windows!
New windows are not only energy efficient, but they’re noise reducing, more secure, and all round better at keeping you cool in the summer.
