Our front doors are the most important doors in our home. We use them everyday, and they are facing the elements through all weathers. So to keep them going as long as possible, they need a bit of looking after. And that includes giving them a clean every so often.
But how do you clean a composite door?
Let’s break it down…
Clean the thresholds
Over time, the threshold of your door can gather dust, dirt, and stones. So to begin, grab a vacuum or brush, and wipe away the dirt.
Then, use warm, soapy water, and a cloth to give it a quick clean. Once that’s done, we’re ready to start work on the main door panel.
Wipe it down
Firstly, grab some warm, soapy water and a microfibre cloth. We use a cloth because they’re kinder to the door’s surface – won’t scratch like a rough sponge or Brillo pad.
Start off by removing any stones, grit, or large grime. We don’t want to wash them as they could scratch the surface. Once that’s done, we can wipe the door down.
Just softly wash the door down using the sponge and the cloth. Make sure to get right into the edges and corners for the best results.
Washing the glass
If your door has a glass panel anywhere, just grab another cloth and some hot water. Wipe the glass down and then dry the glass with a dry cloth. It’s important you don’t let the glass air-dry, otherwise you’ll be left with streaks along the pane.
Letting the door dry
Once you’re happy that your door is clean, leave the door open to air-dry. For composite doors, this is the best tactic to avoid marks.
Lubrication
To give your door a little bit extra TLC, we recommend occasionally lubricating your locking system. You could do this at the same time as cleaning your door.
Simply apply some grease to the hinges, hooks, deadbolt, face of the latch, and sides of the rollers.
IMPORTANT: Never lubricate the cylinder with grease or oil. Instead, use a silicone or graphite-based lubricant.
